Romance Was Born's Fantastical New Collection Inspired by Artist Stephen Bush and Willy Wonka

Some people like to do things like sleeping and breathing, while Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales probably only engage in those activities if it’s solely to gain inspiration for a new campaign/collection/collaboration. In the last few weeks, they’ve got their nails did, opened Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia with a bam and styled a collection of scarves that double as wearable art, and still managed to find the time to present us with a mind-bending Pre-Collection 2012.

This time, Plunkett and Sales go about reinterpreting the works of Australian artist Stephen Bush, delivering his eclectically sublime landscapes in their striking digital prints. The tie-in between the two creatives makes sense considering their mutual love for graphic collages of colour that border on the lurid, as does the introduction of a second inspiration for the collection: Willy Wonka.

RWB favourite Ollie Henderson fronts the collection, hinting at what might happen if you grabbed the most attractive Oompa Loompa of the bunch, put it through the Chocolate Factory’s gum-stretching machine and sent it to a paint party in the 1960s. Kimono jackets and would-be basics drip with atypical subject matter (Bush was particularly drawn to beekeepers and alpine scenes), while silky shirts and mod-ish dresses are covered in lollipop swirls and candy stripes. Swelling vinyls and space-age metallics mark the hallucinatory peak.

It’ll take a while to sleep this one off.

ASOS Marketplace Showcases British Street Style and Emerging Design Talent

This week we’re excited to be visiting Graduate Fashion Week, and hopefully with our eagle eyes, we’ll be able to spot the next top designers to be unleashed into the fashion world. As the upcoming event explores emerging talent, there is a plethora of underrepresented British designers and budding young entrepreneurs that aren't able to showcase their fashionable pieces. Until now, that is.

ASOS Marketplace

It’s great to follow mainstream fashion trends, but sometimes you can’t help but feel a bit extra special knowing that what you’re wearing is unique, vintage, or custom designed. For the past couple of years, the UK’s leading online fashion retailer, ASOS, has tried to fulfill this need whilst simultaneously providing independents the opportunity to sell their unique pieces. ASOS’ initiative is called Marketplace, and practically anybody can sign up and create their own mini online boutique. It now even has sellers from Germany through to the US.

If you aren’t already familiar with Marketplace, it might be sound a little eBay-ish, but in reality, they’re worlds apart. The typical Marketplace seller has full creative control, and this can often mean a mini photo shoot to sell their items. It’s a great way to gain a real glimpse into true British street styles and tastes.

British trends are more than just the catwalks

Fashion tastes differ throughout London’s different boroughs, and there is a stark contrast between the overriding styles in the West compared to the East. West London is filled more with affluent looking business people, and the typical English heritage look, whereas the East is mostly home to young creatives who experiment with their looks, and where hair tied up into a top bun is pretty much the uniform. If you don’t live in London, or if you’re not lucky enough to holiday here anytime soon, then Marketplace is a great place to give you a real feel for what British fashion is all about. If we take a look at the Goldie Boutique on Marketplace, the owner puts together outfits using vintage finds and her own designs upon the streets of East London. Just flicking through her current stock gives you a feel for the East London Vibe. Below left, the obligatory top bun is present, and below right, this laid back Peter Pan collar dress accessorised with a quirky hat and brogues has East written all over it.

So, if you really want a feel for British style, have a flick through the Marketplace boutiques, or if it’s made you feel inspired, become a seller yourself!

10 Tips for Finally Finding Your Bod's Best Bathing Suit

Rihanna in bikini on the beach

For many women, trying on swimwear is like going to the gyno: something they have to do every year, but always dread It can be that awful. Isn’t it about time that changed, though? I mean, wouldn’t it be nice to wake up one day and actually get excited about purchasing a new bathing suit? We’ve consulted the experts to get advice on how to choose the right swimsuit for your figure. From curvy to athletic and big boobs to small, we’ve got tips for every type of bod.

If you’re curvy, look for suits with ruching, stirring, and artful draping that smoothes over the tummy, recommends fashion stylist Jacqui Stafford. “Color-blocked panels down the side give off the illusion of a slimmer, trimmer waist,” she notes, “while prints like diagonal chevron stripes (v-shaped stripes) help to create a leaner silhouette.”

Women with athletic builds should focus on swimwear with feminine cuts and details, says stylist LeAura Luciano. “Show off your toned, lower half with embellishments at the hip and a tapered-back bottom. Soften your chest area with cups, padding, gathering, or a girlie print. And always pass on boy-cut briefs, bandeaus, and shapeless tanks.”

To break up a boy-shaped figure, women should look for suits with “enhancing” elements, says swimwear designer and expert Lourdes Hanimian of Luli Fama. “Tops with cleavage-enhancing padding are ideal. Bikini bottoms should sit lower on the hips and must have a flirty embellishment such as string ties or ruffles.” One-piece monokinis with side cutouts will also create the illusion of an hourglass figure, notes Lourdes.

Concerned about slimming your stomach area? Then be sure to choose a swimsuit with a powernet tummy control panel, advises Suzanne Walker, Fit & Flatter Expert for SwimsuitsForAll.com. “It has a higher concentration of spandex, and the stretchy fiber will help hold you in.” Also, look for one-pieces with shirring or gathers that start at the side seams and stretch across the belly. Busy prints act as a camouflage, she notes, so don’t shy away from animal prints, flowers, or geometric squiggles.

If you prefer a tankini, Suzanne recommends shopping for a style that is looser through the midsection, yet long enough to cover the bottom’s waistband. “Make sure to avoid tankinis that are so tight across the body that they ride up, revealing exactly what you want to hide! Tight tankinis tend to accentuate the softness above the waistband, so a fuller, flowing silhouette really is best.”

If you weren’t exactly blessed in the chest area, go for corset-like tops with padding or halter styles that allow for a push-up effect, suggests Jacqui. “Equally, smaller-chested women can get away with plunging necklines that on other shapes can look too revealing.”

If you have a D-cup or larger, your main concern is probably support, coverage, and possibly minimizing your blessings, says Suzanne. “Your cups need to be deep enough to accommodate your breasts, and the elastic that runs underneath the top should be substantial (at least 1” wide) and continue all around your body, not just stop at the side seams. The design details that are best for minimizing are high and square necklines.”

If you’re a full-busted woman who wants to show off some cleavage, good for you, exclaims Suzanne! Be sure your side coverage is more than adequate though to make up for the lack of it up front. “Armholes should be nice and high. Front cleavage is sexy, but side cleavage? Eh, not so much.”

If your lower half is a littler bit larger, LeAura recommends camouflaging trouble spots with a strategically cut bottom. “Conceal hips and thighs in full-coverage briefs, boy shorts, or hipsters, and draw the eye up with molded cups, halter straps, or cleavage detailing. Steer clear of bold prints on your bottom,” she warns.

“As the pioneer of the ruched bottom, we know how to make a small booty look like it should appear on the cover of a magazine,” exclaims Lourdes. “Our signature ruched bottom is designed to give the illusion of a perky derriere. Women with small butts should shop for a ruched, centered bottom with a wavy finish. Both elements work against flattened skin to give the impression of a nicely shaped rear!”

Help break up a longer torso with high-waisted bikini bottoms that hit just below the navel and shorten the distance between the bustline and the hip, advises Jacqui. “Go for different colored top and bottoms to counteract a longer body. This will help make your waist look smaller as well.”

The key to elongating a short torso is adding length and lifting the bustline, says Jacqui. “Halter neck styles draw attention up to create a broader top half, while low-rise bikini bottoms help stretch out the midsection. Keep away from high-waisted boy shorts, which can make your torso look even shorter.”

Dubious Study Claims That Women Think About Fashion 91 Times a Day

New York Street Style British clothing retailer Very.co.uk sponsored a survey to find out what role fashion plays in women's day-to-day lives. The umbrella finding is a definite headline-maker: mirroring the famous (and false!) statistic that men think about sex once every seven seconds, Very's survey determined that women think about fashion 91 times a day.

First of all, the retailer didn't release details about its methodology, so we have no idea how many women were surveyed and whether these women were selected to be a representative sample or if they were just a self-selected pool of visitors on a fashion website.

But most importantly — and sorry to get all Bill Clinton on you — but the number of times women think about fashion each day depends on what the meanings of the words "think" and "fashion" are. Thought is slippery and associative, more like a steady current of water than a series of solid blocks. If we think about clothing a lot, it might be, in part, because we wear it constantly, so many of our "fashion thoughts" are less, "Whither the flatform?" and more, "Ugh, it's way too hot for me to be wearing this button-down. Does my face look sweaty? I don't want to close the window but it would feel so good to have the AC on right now. It's never, ever cool enough in the summer, or warm enough in the winter. If it were sub-zero outside, this temperature would probably feel toasty and not stifling, so it's totally got to be a psychological thing. Mind over matter. Sort of like how real, true hunger, in an animal sense, is pretty much always an illusion in the calorie-dense Western World. I wish I were eating a sandwich."

Did that count as a fashion thought? Technically, "hot weather style" is a definite fashion dilemma, but if you're conscious, it's inevitable that you'll experience a kind of passing awareness of the garments stuck to your body. Surely, men think these thoughts, too.

Back to School for DSquared2s Fall 2012 Ad Campaign (Forum Buzz)

The DSquared2 boys are putting their own spin on the “Back to School” theme with models Daphne Groeneveld, Bette Franke, Frida Aisen, Simon van Meervenne, Ralf Javoiss, and Liuk Bass posing in a classroom setting to advertise the Fall 2012 collection. Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott photographed the campaign, with art direction by Giovanni Bianco, styling by Katie Grand, hair by Paul Hanlon, and makeup by Charlotte Tilbury.

DSquared2 Fall 2012 ad campaign

DSquared2 has a penchant for being over-the-top and borderline garish at times, but this campaign is a good look for the brand. “This is amaaaazing!” anlabe32 posted. “This fits the collection and the mood of the show so well, and I love the soft colors as well.”

DSquared2 Fall 2012 ad campaign

Psylocke commented, “This looks quite cute. I like that they didn't go too overboard with the high school/prom theme from the runway show, this is different but very much DSquared. The model cast is nice and fits the theme, too,” she added.

Who knows if the apparel will sell well in stores, but the campaign has passed inspection in the Fashion Spot forums with flying colors. So, at least there’s a win in there somewhere.

A Levo League of Their Own: Closed Set with Julie Bensman

Levo League

If, in the first few weeks one launches a website, said site garners press hits including Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, and Business Insider, two things become clear:

In the case of Amanda Pouchot and Caroline Ghosn, both have been proven true. The ladies are co-founders of Levo League, an online community providing resources, networking tools, and support for exceptional women in all stages of their careers. Think of it as a LinkedIn for women, a place where the likes of Susan Lyne (Gilt Groupe) and Fran Hauser (Time, Inc.) engage and advise with members ranging from undergrads to entrepreneurs. Why wouldn’t you want to take advantage of that?

Sure, an Ivy League diploma and a sick resume are tools that make the job search a wee bit easier, but lest we forget le look of the candidate. A cleavage-baring dress paired with your favorite skull jewelry doesn’t exactly scream power executive, now does it? And what exactly IS the rule for wearing open-toed shoes to an interview? And once you land the $23,000/year magazine job you wanted so badly (not that I’m speaking from experience or anything), how is one expected to take her meager earnings and buy an entire closet of new office ensembles? So many questions, so little time.

Besides being tech- and business-savvy, Pouchot (above, right) and Ghosn (above, left) also know a thing or two about fashion-forward, yet office-appropriate attire. I caught up with the duo to get down to business.

Julie Bensman: When it comes to a building a professional wardrobe, which three items should every woman own?

Caroline Ghosn:

JB: How does office attire differ at a corporate job vs. a start-up/creative company?

CG: In a corporate job, the goal of your attire is often to communicate that you are a serious, hygienic, dependable individual. At a start-up, I tend to find that the goal differs: you want to express your individuality, your sense of curation and your approach to culture (whether it be counter- or pro-). The results ensue from the purpose.

JB: As the old adage goes, first impressions are everything. How true is this in the current professional environment, especially as it relates to women?

Amanda Pouchot: According to data, you have less than a second to make an impression. While it’s important to be physically put-together, nothing means more to a first impression than a natural smile and a welcoming attitude. People want to meet and be around other people who are positive.

CG: We, as humans, are visual creatures and we draw patterns. If I walk into a meeting with my shirt untucked, my bra strap out and my hair in a messy bun, will you extrapolate that I am a hard-working, values-oriented young professional with parents that made Tiger Mom's thesis emollient?

JB: How would you describe your own personal styles?

AP: I'm a tomboy-turned-New York fashion-obsessed woman on a budget. I’m often more comfortable in running shoes and on the field, but when I do get the chance, I love an amazing pair of heels, skinny pants, a fun flowy shirt, and a great necklace. I'm all about comfort and trying to be myself and believe that fashion is about expressing yourself through what you wear.

CG: Classic with a twist and an occasional dare. I always seek an interesting element or structure to my clothing and am fascinated by the concept of craftsmanship and creativity as it applies to fashion. I am also attracted to feminine florals after hours, but often in powerful, counterintuitive shapes.

JB: What's next for Levo League?

AP: This summer is all about improving our product offering to the community, continuing to get to know our members and building the strongest community of women out there to support one another. A favorite initiative at the moment is our matching program, where each member is matched with another member we think they could learn from, inspire, or help.

Afros, Cosplay, and More Downtown Street Style Snaps from NYC's Spring Street

After a great deal of people-watching, we've come to the conclusion that some of the most popular hairstyles this summer include afros (which certainly provide one with a sense of strength and femininity), as well as vibrant, dramatic colors, on all hair styles, lengths, and textures, from flaming neon orange with a mullet cut to a full head of purple locks.

Take a look at some photos we shot that depict these trends, and perhaps you will gather up some courage to dye your hair to that gorgeous shade of green you've been dreaming about for months!

  • Afros

Afros are everywhere, and we can only guess that a major cause of this trend is due to the hairstyle's versatility. Whether your find yourself wearing camo tees and motorcycle boots or maxi dresses and heels, an afro adds so much extra power and oomph to an otherwise simple outfit.

One of the most popular beauty trends of the season, dip-dyed hairstyles have been spotted in every hue, from blonde under brown to blue over green.
